By profession I am a sometime electronics
engineer with a background in radio and telecommunications,
who accidentally got into software development in the early
days of microprocessors (yes, before the IBM PC became
ubiquitous) but I have always had an interest in the whole
package, mechanical, electrical, electronic, software,
manufacture, etc. I've worked in manufacturing
organisations, had a spell in management consulting and
worked for a number of systems integration houses. I've
run my own consulting business and now I am the Principal
Engineer for a £1b p.a. turnover eCommerce operation,
specialising in systems architecture and technical
strategy.
Over the years I have had involvement in a
wide range of fields including ground-to-ground and
ground-to-air military communications, spacecraft downlink
telemetry, guidance systems, flight avionics, control room
systems, remote monitoring faciltiies, high-throughput
transactional systems, enterprise-wide integration solutions,
and many industry-specifc applications.
Although not a
mechanical engineer by training (my father was however) I have
always had an enjoyment of taking things apart and putting
them back together just to see how they work and I have
always maintained my own cars.
I was a keen cyclist, riding 200 - 250 miles a week, until Oct 2012
when I broke my neck in a serious accident, leaving me permanently tetraplegic (C6A) and in a wheelchair. Although I can no longer use my workshop (which is now all in storage until such time as I figure out how to adapt things) I am still able to think and design stuff. Watch this space for ideas I am working on to help my rehabilitation and improve my life.
